Shining the light of Christ into our community.
First Congregational Church of Torrington

On Sunday, November 13, 2011 the church family responded to a request from Missions for funds to buy turkeys for Friendly Hands Food Bank. Our church family donated a total of $125.00, God is good! We went to Price Choppers on Monday and were able to buy 10 large turkeys which we gave to Friendly Hands. Thank you all for your caring and generosity.

We have 15 Angels for Christmas from Friendly Hands, they will be on the Christmas Tree in the Fellowship Hall this coming Sunday, November 20th. There will be two angels, one green and one red for each child. Please take only one and leave the other signed, on the tree. Should we need to contact you we have a phone # that we may call. The angel tag will have "Person/group phone #________" on it. We are doing this because we do not want a burden placed on any one person to buy all the gifts and in previous years we have run out of tags. You may "Buddy-up" with others in buying gifts. The tags will have a name and sizes along with gift suggestions. Please have them wrapped with their tag and/or name and returned to the Fellowship Hall by Sunday, December 18th after services so they may be brought to Friendly Hands on Monday morning. Thank you all.

Minutes of Missions Meeting
September 29, 2011

Pastor Steve opened the meeting in prayer.

Janet Iffland gave the Treasurer’s report.

We will begin to collect non-perishable foods for Friendly Hand beginning in October and ending just before Thanksgiving. Needed are foods for Thanksgiving Dinners, such as sweet potatoes, olives, croutons, corn, peas, stuffing mixes, gravy and foods you would buy for your own dinner.

If you would like to donate any funds for turkeys, please see Janet Iffland or Phil Lent. We will use the funds to buy the turkeys just before Thanksgiving and bring them to Friendly Hands or Fish.

We have asked Friendly Hands for 15 Angels so we may buy gifts for this Christmas. Please “Buddy-up” with others to buy gifts. You don’t need to buy all the gifts by yourself unless you are lead to. The gifts should be wrapped as in past years with the child’s name and age. Bring them to the Missions box and we will bring them to Friendly Hands.

The need in Torrington is very real and very great. Speaking with “Mo” Hubert, I was told there are over 400 children for Christmas and the number for food increases exponentially when parents are added.  We are also speaking with Panera’s about the possibility of picking up unsold breads from the 5th Mondays of the months for our congregation.

There is a possibility that our children may join with Thomaston Cong. Church in doing Christmas Stockings for Camp Urban Hope.

The Connecticut Food Bank will be at our church on Thursday October 20th, 2011 @ 10:00 a.m. Members and volunteers will help in the distribution of food.

Pastor Steve closed our meeting in prayer.

Our next Missions meeting will be at Phil’s home (123 McGuinness St., Torrington) on November 30, 2011, 7:00 p.m.

I am back from the India Mission Trip and it was such a blessing! I am still riding high as I remember the wonderful people we met and the many ways we were able to minister to them. I have attached a few pictures and will soon be presenting a presentation to those who would like to see and hear about this great trip. I will post when the presentation will be scheduled.  -Pastor Steve

As we scan the horizon we see where God is working and join Him there. Currently we are focusing on the devastation in Haiti and joined with Christian World Outreach in providing needed supplies to that country. We continue to reach out to the community in which we live through giving to established organizations who provide food and clothing to the needy such as Friendly Hands, FISH and the Torrington Area Council of Churches Emergency Fund. We support Camp Hope in Bantam through gifts and work days.
